Sometimes it's hard to admit you're wrong. Really hard. I got some chairs from my mom and recovered some of them. They were VERY difficult to recover and my decorating ADD kicked in and I never got all of them finished. But, ya know.... it's because they weren't right. The fabric was wayyyy too contemporary for my home. They're beautiful, but wrong.
This weekend I got a pair of these white chairs for $13 - for the pair! They were a little too white and had a bad paint job, so a little sanding and some distressing later, they fit in just right!
Have you ever made a big decorating mistake?
Did you live with it or just bite the bullet and cut your losses?
Please tell me I'm not crazy for buying $80 in fabric for chairs that I'm not even going to keep!
Umm... and if you want about 5 yards of said fabric, please email me, I will cut you a SWEET deal!

oh bummer! sorry for the time/$$ spent on that- they look good, anyway! i've totally been there... regretting a bench i purchased & re-covered in a favorite fabric. it looks fine, but not great! wish i had that $50 back right now as we settle into our new home!
happy monday!
rachel
but those white chairs are great! : )
Thanks, Rachel! I wish I had found two more!
put those babies on craigslist! someone would love to have those!
I agree! Sell them on Craigslist!
I think we all have done something like this! That's one of the reasons I have a little booth- if it doesn't work out- SELL IT!!

Sometimes, we've got to get an idea or project out of our systems. Live and learn. I'm staring at $150 in rugs that I kind of wish I hadn't purchased this summer and am trying to unload on Craigslist so I can buy what I REALLY should've held out for. :)
Love the chairs! You should totally sell 'em!!
That's so sad, those original chairs are absolutely beautiful! The $13 price tags on the new ones is pretty nice though.
I have made so many mistakes like this though - its what Craigslist is for :)
I've done it often and I too have a little booth at a local store where I sell the things that didn't work out.
I've slowly learned to hold out for the things I really want. Which is why I have 2 flokati rugs on their way to me instead of purchasing several rugs I was just meh about
Oh, yes, ALL the time!! I like those chairs though!! And I agree, put them up on craigslist. Someone is going to be one happy camper!!
That was my thought....."craigslist"....you may can even sell the extra fabric with them!!!!!!

I always feel that I made errors and it takes me forever to make a decision! When I bought my daughter a beautiful iron bed, I should have bought a new full mattress but I said, no we have the twin. It is gorgeous, but the full makes more sense now...Those chairs are gorgeous but I see your point...you are so talented -slipcover them!

Girl ...dont feel bad. I did the same thing with two of my chairs. Lesson learned..smiles~
Oh Angie,
I'm sorry about your chair disappointment.
We've all been there.
Thank you for coming by, and for the hugs (re dementia in family).
It is a hard time, but you seem to understand that.

I love the fabric but totally understand as I have done the same myself. I can't wait to see the total look with the new chairs.
I'm embarrassed to admit the amount of money I've spent on fabric that didn't work out. And the number of half-finished projects that I know will never get done. I so totally relate!
But I can't wait to see the finish to that pair of chairs :) I know they'll be awesome!
Thanks, y'all! Yes, I'm going to sell them - so if anybody wants them, just let me know.
Good Morning and Happy New Year!
Yes, I am in the boat with you and everyone else--have purchased alot of the WRONG things! I love that material! In my opinion, it is not the material that is wrong, it is the style of chair. I think that is what you decided in the end, too. That slipper style chair would look great in a bedroom. Do you not have a place for the pair of them? With your decorating skills, I bet you will come out way on top of the game. If you sell them, you will probably recoup most of your money I have faith in ya!
Have a great week.
We've all made that mistake, it proves that we're human. I do love your new chairs, it's the kind that I am looking for.
I read (on another blog) that you have a white porecelain sink. Do you like it? Does it scratch or mark easily, if so, do the marks come out? Would you buy one again? I have my heart set on one, but I can't find this info on it. Thanks. Hugs, Cindy S.
Cindy,
I do have a white sink, but I bought mine used. It was less than 1/25th the price of a brand new one. It was already scratched and I just had to give it a good cleaning. I bought it used intentionally, because I knew they would scratch over time and I saved my wallet as well as my heart, because I would have been heart broken to spend $500 on a brand new sink and then it get scratched one day. Buying used meant that it was already scratched, so I don't know how easily the new ones scratch. I do know that it comes clean as a whistle when you fill it up with water and add a 1/2 cup bleach. Just let it soak for half an hour and it looks like new. I LOVE my sink, and I bet you'd love yours, too!
I think the fabric is pretty, but I agree that is isn't quite the same "cottage style" as the rest of your beautiful home.
I have made plenty of decorating mistakes myself. Sometimes I try so hard to be thrifty and go the cheaper route instead of spending a little more and getting what I really want. Then I just end up having to redo it or buy the more expensive thing because I don't like the cheaper version.
Let me just say that I feel like my entire house is a huge decoarting mistake! After starting to read so many blogs I feel like I need some serious help! Thanks for letting us know you're human, and congrats on such a great score on those chairs!
Thanks so much for the info. I will be picking mine up, brand new, next week! It will go in shortly. I wish I could get one used, but my hubby goes for "the best" only. I really appreciate it and while I am at it, I really enjoy your blog!!! Thank you for it. Hugs, Cindy S.
I LOVE those chairs!! Phew, just HAD to say that!
I do it all the time experimenting with things! I just can't stop though until it's right - so if I hate what I've done, it quickly gets replaced :)
I know exactly what you mean! I got a free dining table and chairs with great bones, just needed some sanding, painting, and staining and it'd be BEAUTIFUL! Unfortunately, I painted to white chairs black, so not my style but I was trying to "branch out". Let's just say I've spent the past couple of nights resanding and repriming those chairs so that I can paint them a classic cream and glaze them. So much more my style, so what was I thinking?!?
HI Gina,
Making mistakes help us learn, right? (isn't that what we're supposed to tell our children?!!)
I like the chairs, but if you don't like them they are pretty bold and can't be ignored! I bet you could sell them very quickly on craig's list. Good luck, keep trying new things! Mistakes are just opportunities to try it again.
Happy New Year!

Yes, indeed it is better to throw in the towel sometimes. That is cool fabric, someone will love them, it.
I did something really embarrassing this week! I wanted one of those pottery barn bookcases to put behind my couch, you know the ones with the glass doors? Well, at around $1600 there was no way I could afford it... I got the idea to search craigslist for old windows to salvage and build a cabinet around. Found some and they were a bit out of the way but my loving husband went after them for me. Well, I measured the car wrong and they didn't fit so I had to borrow a truck and go even further to get them. Now I have them and they are in really bad shape, probably lead based paint on them and Im wondering if it will all be worth it. I will have to wait until the weather is nice to see since I can't work on them right now. What a mess!
I don't live with it, at least not for long. I justify it by telling myself (and hubby) that I save a ton of money all the time on home things, I am allowed to blow it every now and then :)!
Oh yes indeedy! I bought fabric which I thought would be perfect to make a coverlet for my bed. After I made it, I hated it as it just didn't look right with the shams and dust ruffle and table cloth that I had. I was just sick!! Then my husband told me I needed more contrast between the two fabrics and ya know, he was right! I didn't even know he knew what contrast was!! So I got some cute square pillows in a solid to place in front of the euro shams and voila, it did look better. It's still not my fav but I can live with it long enough to feel I got my money's worth.
The chairs look great!~!and you are not alone!! I've blundered through so many projects, repainting things a thousand times, ok so not a thousand, but alot!!!
Love your blog1
Does a huntin' dog chase rabbits??? The answer is Yes, Yes, Yes this Ozarks chick has blundered in the decorating department many times. What is wrong for your home doesn't mean they won't be the perfect fit in someone elses...i'd sell them.
Have a fantastic day and God bless ya'll!!!
Yep, I had to toss a project about a week ago. Made me sick. But it happens.
Brenda
I think that we have all been there...put them on craigslist...they are sooo pretty and should sell fast!
Blessings,
Linda
No, you are NOT crazy for spending that. I think we all have done something similiar, I for one know that I have.
Oh, and if you have a good sized scrap piece, I would be interested. I need it for a miniature project!
Smiles~

Decorating regrets? I've got LOTS of those, how much time do you have? :)
Just "chuck it" and start over, that's my motto, and a big source of frustration for the hubby. Have a great day!
I love the chairs==the style of them is just darling. Do you want to keep the chairs and recover them ? If you don't want to recover them you could always sell them on craigs list--I bet they go fast.
I would love to do a guest spot or blog swap.
Love your blog.
Cheri
I've made some error's in judgement- mostly with wall paint colors. So now I photoshop the paint in, before I buy, using GIMP, a free photoshopish program. Once I figured out how to use it, it saved hours of time and angst. Plus its a cheap way to try out new items.
I like to think that my style is developing and I can't always pin point what would make it better. But I totally agree with your sentiment of staying true to yourself. Definitely experience new things, but if you already know what you love- why not just embrace it?
I so totally bought $65 worth of fabric to recover my husband's club chair and the roll is STILL leaning up against the wall behind some stuff in our living room. Going on month 5?? I think a project this big will require a couple of days off from work....i refuse to give up.(ha!)
They are pretty, but I understand if they are not your style.
I have an expensive mistake in my closet. Well, it's not really a mistake, just an expensive unfinished project. I spent over $200 on upholstery fabric (a stripe and a floral) a few years ago, brought the bolts home, and they are still in my closet. I love the colors and designs, but I'm not sure what to do with them now. I think I got cold feet... really cold feet, lol!
What is wrong for your home doesn't mean they won't be the perfect fit in someone elses...i'd sell them.
