Free for fall

Pinecones, corn stalks, acorns, leaves and branches. All things that can be found for free and are perfect for fall decorating. I spent all afternoon gathering corn stalks, pine cones and pears for preserving. Ahhhh... the bounty of fall!

I'm from the Sierra Mountains and loved collecting pine cones as a kid. Your post made me think of home, thanks!

Fall is so wonderful!
We drove by our soon to be house today and I was admiring all the fallen leaves in the yad from the maple and the cones from the pines... I thought to myself what a blessing all these goodies will be when decorating!
Have FUN!

What a fabulous idea.. I was just thinking hmm.. what can I do with all these pinecones sitting around outside. Maybe I'll head off to Michael's (with a coupon of course!) and get a wreath to add pinecones and acorns to!

Aren't free, natural things the best and most beautiful?

Wonderful idea to use what nature give us, but as a precautionary note....
If I collect wet or closed pinecones and bring them in a warm home environment--suddenly many bugs can be released--bad idea.

I have found that baking sappy cones in aluminum foil at 200 degrees for 20 minutes will seal the sap and kill the bugs (if any). Be sure to open your windows to ventilate the turpentine odor when you do this! I almost gassed myself the first time I did this.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Oh no, wait, that's Christmas. It's the most bountiful time of the year! I love the free decorating too! Do you have osage oranges near you? That's my favorite thing to collect for fall, and supposedly if you bring them inside, they keep spiders away!

I love the free stuff too! Our backyard is full of pinecones and I can't wait to go out and collect them for projects!

I'm with you! I love pine cones and decorating with branches and all that good stuff, but my absolutely favorite this time of year is white pumpkins!

Great reminder that we don't need to go to Pottery Barn and spend $20 to get this look!
Thank you, Rettabug, for the baking tip to get rid of unwanted guests :)

Yep, nature provides a warm, down-home feeling to our decorating. I finally became a follower!

I also love collecting .. especially when my grandkids were younger and I could get them to "play with me" more often ... then we'd make some great wreaths ...I especially like using the pepper berries off the trees. ..Thanks for reminding me ..I'm gonna walk and collect soon.

Good point! My kids love to GATHER those treasures. :) By the way, I heard you can bake pinecones for a bit at 200 degrees to get rid of little bugs...

Free Pine Cones are one of my favorite things. For years I've had a door decoration that was nothing more than pinecones with a hint of gold spray paint, stapled to red and green ribbons of different lengths, and gathered up like a big tassel. So simple but very classy. And close to FREE!

Great reminder that decorating doesn't have to be expensive and some of the best things are free. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
